Asbestos is commonly found in older buildings in floor tiles, ceiling tiles, and walls. So, after renovation or demolition of such buildings, or construction of new buildings, it’s best to have an asbestos removal plan.
The health risks associated with asbestos exposure can’t ever be ignored. Asbestos can dry and mix in the air, and when you expose yourself to asbestos-containing material and inhale the microscopic fibres, they can cause multiple diseases including lung cancer.
So, effective asbestos management plans should always consider asbestos removal from wherever possible. However, this critical and dangerous task is better left to certified professionals like us. We are a certified environmental consultant and can help you with asbestos removal in a proper way.
Here, we have stated the correct way of disposing of asbestos for your awareness.
Beginning The Work
First, check with your local environmental management and consultant service providers and see if they accept asbestos disposal requests. Ask for requirements such as the correct asbestos disposal bags and start your work.
- Wear your PPE including masks and gloves at all times when working with asbestos. Also, provide sufficient protection to workers, family, whoever is working with it, be it commercial or residential place. Use double-strapped masks, gloves, and goggles to stay protected.
- Keep regular materials like children’s toys or carpets and other such stuff far away from the site. These can trap asbestos and later release them in the air putting everyone at risk.
- Do not let your family, children, and pets, who are not working on asbestos removal come nearby the worksite. You can also use safety signs as a precaution.
- Always turn off air conditioning or heating before you begin with the work.
During The Removal Process
You have to extra cautious all the times when removing asbestos and you should follow precautions such as:
- Use plastic to cover the work area. Use heavy-duty plastic and place it under the asbestos-containing material to prevent any loose asbestos to fall off and contaminate the floor.
- Spray the asbestos material with a lot of water. This will reduce the risk of asbestos fibers getting released into the air.
- Avoid breaking larger materials into smaller pieces, as that will only release more asbestos fibers into the air.
Transport And Disposal
- After removing the asbestos from your place, carefully wrap the plastic sheets containing the material. Double-tape it to reduce the risks of exposure and then put them securely into the asbestos disposal bags and label them clearly to state that they contain asbestos.
- Stack the asbestos bags carefully one over the other. Prevent them from slipping or sliding.
- Clean the entire area thoroughly with water or wet cloth. Clean all your PPE and put them in different bags and label them accordingly.
Now, it’s time to dispose of the asbestos. But for that, you need to know where asbestos is disposed of in your locality, and then safely dispose of the bags.
Asbestos removal requires extreme caution to be maintained throughout the process. Any accidental exposure to asbestos-containing materials can cause serious health hazards.
